Baby thrush is yet another name for baby yeast infection.  It is a type of yeast infection that results from the build up of bacteria in the baby’s mouth and private areas.  It manifests itself on new born babies as well as older infants.  Despite the fact that baby yeast infection is not regarded as life- threatening, it makes babies extremely uncomfortable.

As baby yeast infection has no symptoms, telling when babies have it is difficult.  Nonetheless, paying close attention to the baby’s behavior is an easy way of knowing if the baby is suffering from thrush.  Often times, babies suffering from thrush are angry, grumpy and frustrated especially during feeding time.  A white and gray curd-like and lacy area on the infant’s mouth or tongue is how thrush clinically presents itself.  Infected babies keep spitting out pacifiers and do not keep them in their mouths.

Baby yeast infection is caused by antibiotics.  Antibiotics are notorious for weakening babies’ immune systems thus causing candida, the yeast causing bacteria to grow.  A mother can transmit the infection to her child.  An infected mother is likely to pass on the infection to her child through breast feeding.  It is possible for the infected mother to pass infection onto her baby during breast feeding.  Therefore, parents are instructed to make sure pacifiers and bottles used by the baby are meticulously cleaned.  Humid and warm weather also cause the bacteria to thrive.

In the initial stages, baby yeast infection is regarded as harmless.  However, the infection has serious side effects for instance dehydration and malnutrition.  Additional side effects include difficulty in swallowing and suckling plus discomfort.  The thrush causes diaper rush when it spreads through the child’s gastro-intestinal system in the advanced stages.

Baby yeast infection is best dealt with by sterilizing such baby equipment as bottles and pacifiers.  Because the yeast causing bacteria is known to thrive in moist environments, keeping the equipment dry also comes highly recommended.  Changing the baby diapers the instant they get dirty is important.  In addition, clean the infant’s private parts and ensure they remain dry.  At all times, let the infant’s bottom air-dry for some time before placing the diapers.  Ensure that the diapers are not too tight.  This puts a stop to the bacteria’s growth.  If infection persists, it is best you consult a pediatrician.  He/she is capable of treating the infection by providing the right medication.
