Using Nature to Your Advantage When Treating Yeast Infections – Acidophilus
If you are female then it is very likely you will have already dealt with a yeast infection or will do at some point. But when that time comes, if it has not already, do not get sucked into the promises of quick fixes. All they do is mask the problem, or give you temporary relief, the infection will return and will be worse if you do not find and deal with the root cause of the infection. Acidophilus can be used as a natural treatment and it deals with the root of the problem without the side effects you get from medications.
There is a fungus that lives on our bodies called Candida Albicans. Usually it is harmless because the good bacteria we also have control its numbers ensuring it does not overgrow. But if for various reasons, those good bacteria are reduced ( from antibiotics) or the immune system is weakened the fungus is able to rapidly grow, leading to a yeast infection.
Symptoms vary, but can include an odor, a cottage cheese like discharge, itching, redness, swelling, burning along with fatigue, depression, migraines, aching joints, gastro intestinal problems and mood swings.
Acidophilus works as a yeast infection treatment because it helps the body replenish its good bacteria so they can then regain control of the fungus’ growth. It also means the vagina has the right acidity so that the Candida does not have the ideal breeding ground and finds it harder to take root. Unsweetened and plain yogurt is one way to keep optimum good bacteria levels. Eating it everyday is one way to use it, but it can also be used on the infected area directly. Other sources of Lactobacillus Acidophilus are probiotic drinks or you can get it in capsule form from health stores.
While topping up your good bacteria you can also work on your diet. Avoid sugars and refined carbohydrates and eat more foods rich in Vitamin C and Lactobacillus Acidophilus. Clean and dry frequently and make sure the area prone to infection is well ventilated so loose clothing and cotton underwear.
